Advanced Therapies — Pain Pumps & Spinal Cord Stimulation

For some patients, chronic pain persists despite injections, therapy, medication, and even surgery. Advanced implantable therapies exist for exactly these situations — and managing them well requires a physician experienced in both the technology and the long-term care around it.

Spinal cord stimulator trials

A spinal cord stimulator delivers mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord that interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain. The defining advantage of this therapy is that you can try it before committing: a trial stimulator uses temporary leads placed during an in-office procedure, letting you test the therapy in your daily life for about a week. If the trial meaningfully reduces your pain, you can decide about a permanent implant with real evidence in hand. Stimulation is commonly considered for failed back surgery syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and chronic nerve pain in the limbs.

Intrathecal pain pump management

An intrathecal pump delivers pain medication directly into the fluid around the spinal cord, where far smaller doses achieve relief — often with fewer systemic side effects than oral medication. Our clinic provides ongoing management for patients with implanted pumps: refills, dose adjustments, and monitoring, close to home in Green Bay rather than requiring travel to a distant center.

Is advanced therapy right for you?

These therapies are typically considered after more conservative approaches have been given a fair trial. Dr. Wilkins will review your history honestly — including whether simpler options remain untried — before recommending an advanced therapy.
